NEC Grows DSX Family
By Sandra M. Gustavsen, Analyst, T3i Group LLC
NEC (News - Alert) Unified Solutions addresses the economics of small business with the new DSX-40, a Key telephone system designed for businesses with five–20 employees. DSX-40 is the newest member of the DSX family, which includes the DSX-80 and DSX-160, introduced in 2006 as the next generation of the company’s earlier DS Series for small to medium-sized businesses. The DSX is available in three configurations to suit any size small or medium business, scaling to 34 line/station ports (DSX-40) or 72 line/station ports (DSX-80) or 144 line/station ports (DSX-160). All circuitry, programming, telephones and optional hardware are retained when migrating from the DSX-80 to the DSX-160. The DSX-40 KSU and the expansion daughter boards are specific to the DSX-40, however, and are not compatible with the larger models, though all other components can be reused.

“Like its predecessor, the DS1000, the DSX-40 was introduced to handle small commercial applications, but the DSX-40 has received FCC (News - Alert) Part 15 Class B certification, so it is also the perfect solution for residential applications,” notes Michael Pataky, Director of Product Management, KTSII, NEC Unified Solutions.
Notable features and improvements over the earlier DS Series include PC programming via an IP
connection, built-in auto attendant, high density 16-port analog trunk and station cards, ISDN PRI support (DSX-80 and DSX-160 only) and new compact telephones with built-in speakerphone, wall mounting and large display. The 34-Button models are equipped with a backlit display and backlit keypad. All telephones include 10 one-touch speed dial keys, 12 or 24 programmable feature keys with dual-color LEDs and a built-in headset jack.
NEC’s integrated flash-memory-based IntraMail voice mail and auto attendant (integrated card option) is available in four- and eight-port configurations and features call record, answering machine emulation, Caller ID with return call and interactive soft keys for display phone users. New Version 2.11 software adds e-mail integration that automatically sends an e-mail notification when a DSX keyset user receives a new message in their voice mailbox. Optionally, the e-mail can include the recorded message as a wav file attachment (requires IntraMail Pro 4 Port x 16 Hour or IntraMail Pro8 Port x 32 Hour).
The new NEC DSX is currently available in the U.S. only. Earlier DS Series systems (DS1000 and DS2000) have been sold in North America, Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) and Asia Pacific (APAC). For more information visit www.necdsx.com.
