RCN Metro Optical Networks Unveils New Colocation Facility

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN (News - Alert) Corp., has announced the availability of its new, state-of-the-art high density colocation facility located at 165 Halsey Street, Newark, NJ. This will enable RCN Metro to provide colocation services in 24 facilities located throughout its footprint, states the company.

RCN Metro offers colocation services in 23 facilities located throughout the northeast, mid-Atlantic and out in Chicago. RCN Metro has strategically positioned each colocation center to facilitate high bandwidth connectivity to the RCN Metro network, including carrier hotels, local switch offices, as well as numerous service providers. Positioning equipment in one of RCN Metro’s colocation centers ensures fast provisioning without expensive and time-consuming build-outs.

This state-of-the-art, carrier-class colocation center in New Jersey is a fully secure, temperature-controlled facility, states RCN. It provides power-ready racks, cabinets, and bulk space and offers features such as sophisticated power and HVAC systems capable of handling the demands of high density server technologies now and into the future.

"With many of the major financial exchanges moving into New Jersey, we strategically positioned this facility to ensure our ability to provide trading companies the closest possible solution with high bandwidth connectivity to the RCN Metro network and major financial exchanges in order to ensure the lowest possible latency,” Felipe Alvarez (News - Alert), president, RCN Metro, said in a statement. “We conducted rigorous tests to ensure our power and HVAC systems were state-of-the-art.”

Supporting SONET, DWDM, and Ethernet Services, the new, high density space includes diverse fiber entrances into the building with diversely routed risers in conduit. It also provides other features such as APC (News - Alert) InRow RD, 300mm Units, APC Hot Aisle Containment System, ANSUL Fire Suppression System and Commercial Electrical Service.

Last June, the company announced the launch of its Chicago network. RCN has completed the build of a fiber ring encompassing more than 10 miles located in downtown Chicago to augment the existing 538-mile fiber network the company already has in the area. This gives RCN a robust footprint and capabilities in the heart of the city.
